Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts

Television | By The Top 13 on November 16, 2009

In the midst of one of the worst Saturday Night Live seasons in recent memory, The Top 13 figured it was a good time to take a look at what has made SNL must see television over the past few years. We're counting down our Top 13 Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts. In December of 2005, SNL aired the first digital short from new cast member Andy Samberg's three-man comedy troupe The Lonely Island (Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer round out the trio), and for the first time in years became both relevant and incredibly quotable again. For a list of all digital shorts that SNL has aired, see here.

Lazy Sunday

1

Lazy Sunday

The one that started it all. Sure, SNL had aired one other digital short a few weeks before (the criminally unfunny "Lettuce"), but this was the spark that had everyone asking their friends to "pass the chronic WHAT!" and surely led to a shortage of Mr. Pibb and Red Vines on the Upper West Side. Double True.

Dick in a Box

2

Dick in a Box

Probably the most popular digital short, and with good reason. Samberg teams up with Justin Timberlake (making one of a number of appearances in digital shorts with the Lonely Island crew) to deliver an R&B slow jam about the greatest gift of all.

I'm on a Boat

3

I'm on a Boat

Samberg wins a boat ride for three and instead of taking Jorma decides to tap auto-tune master T-Pain to join himself and Akiva on the trip. Released as a single off the Lonely Island's album, Incredibad, "I'm on a Boat" actually reached number 56 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

Like a Boss

4

Like a Boss

Samberg explains his average day at the workplace during his performance review, given to him by that evening's host, Seth Rogan. His daily activities go from the mundane (promoting synergy) to the insane (turning into a jet and bombing Russia). After all, he's the boss.

Natalie Raps

5

Natalie Raps

Chris Parnell interviews Natalie Portman, who with an expletive laden rap about drugs, sex and murder shows that she might not be as sweet and innocent as the public generally views her. Watch for Samberg as the Flavor Flav-style hype man.

Ras Trent

6

Ras Trent

Samberg plays a college kid that converts to Rastafari, dislikes ignorant bald heads, and toils part time at Ja Cold Stone Creamery. While Kristen Wiig and Casey Wilson play the backup singers in the video, vocals were actually provided by indie harpist Joanna Newsom (Samberg's girlfriend) and Maya Rudolph. Dub Style!

Jizz in My Pants

7

Jizz in My Pants

Featuring yet another cameo from Timberlake, joined this time by Molly Sims and Jamie Lynn-Sigler, "Jizz in My Pants" was actually the first single off the Lonely Island's album. Not surprisingly, as it's actually the closest thing to a good song (as opposed to just funny) that the trio has created.

Young Chuck Norris

8

Young Chuck Norris

Jason Sudeikis sings his tribute to his hero Chuck Norris (played by Samberg), focusing on the younger years of his idol, before he became Walker Texas Ranger.

Laser Cats

9

Laser Cats

Samberg and Bill Hader pitch their new painfully low-budget sci-fi short film filled with everyone's two favorite things (cats and lasers) to Saturday Night Live head honcho Lorne Michaels. If you enjoy this one, you will probably like the three follow up "Laser Cats" videos that have aired, as well.

Roy Rules

10

Roy Rules

Samberg's tribute to his brother-in-law, Roy. Needless to say, Samberg has mixed emotions about having Roy in the family. Not much more to it, and the simplicity might be the best thing about it.

Iran So Far

11

Iran So Far

Samberg teams up with Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine for this loving tribute to Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (played perfectly by Fred Armisen). Favorite lyric: "You can deny the Holocaust all you want but you can't deny that there’s something between us."

People Getting Punched Just Before Eating

12

People Getting Punched Just Before Eating

This is a ridiculous short in which Samberg makes his way around town punching people just before they take a bite of something, and then celebrates. Only Will Forte tries to fight back and Samberg's reaction is priceless. Features cameos by Jon Bon Jovi, and Foo Fighters Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins.

Business Meeting

13

Business Meeting

Due to budget cuts, Rainn Wilson has to call an emergency meeting of the workers at his office to come up with a plan to reduce corporate spending. He goes around the room seeking the advice of employees such as Mountain Joe, a gigantic turkey sub, the CEO's nephew, Captain Pajama Shark, and that week's musical guest, Arcade Fire, before receiving a phone call that proves the meeting to be moot.
