Worst Movie Moms

Movies, Misc | By The Top 13 on May 7, 2010

With Mother's Day this Sunday, the Top 13 is taking a look at some of the moms from the movie world that don't quite deserve to be honored. These are the mothers that, for whatever reason, failed in their responsibilities to their children. Some are physically abusive, some are mentally abusive, but all of them could use parenting lessons. Here are the Top 13 Worst Movie Moms. Happy Mother's Day!

Mary in Precious

1

Mary in Precious

2009

Mo'Nique was awarded a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her stunning portrayal of Mary, the angry and violent mother of Precious' titular character in this indie hit from last year. We simply can't overstate just how heartbreaking it is to watch Mary's treatment of her 16-year-old daughter. From doing nothing to prevent Precious' father from repeatedly raping her to Mary's own constant physical and emotional abuse of her daughter, she is a picture of brutality and dysfunction.

Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest

2

Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest

1981

Until Precious came along last year, Joan Crawford was without peer as the worst mom in movie history. Loosely based on a book by Joan Crawford's adopted daughter, Mommie Dearest tells the story of the author's violent and volatile relationship with her domineering mother. Played by Faye Dunaway, Crawford is as erratic and abusive as can be. Indeed, she's so unpredictably terrorizing that she actually made our Top 13 Unhinged Movie Characters.

Margaret White in Carrie

3

Margaret White in Carrie

1976

One of the most disturbing mothers on this Top 13, Margaret White is a religious extremist who aggressively pushes her unique brand of fundamentalism on her possessed daughter Carrie. Piper Laurie is downright scary as White, who reacts to news that Carrie has entered puberty with her typical fanaticism. She insists that her menstruation is a sign that she has sinned and locks her in a closet to pray for forgiveness. With a mom like that, Carrie didn't stand a chance at normalcy.

Mrs. Lift in Throw Momma from the Train

4

Mrs. Lift in Throw Momma from the Train

1987

The first of two moms brought to life by Anne Ramsey on this Top 13, Mrs. Lift is the (possibly) insane and (definitely) overbearing mother of the spineless struggling writer Owen Lift, played by the film's director Danny DeVito. Ramsey is positively fantastic (and was rewarded with an Oscar nomination) as the nasty and abusive mom who torments the middle-aged Lift, prompting him to haplessly conspire with his writing teacher to kill her.

Mama Boucher in The Waterboy

5

Mama Boucher in The Waterboy

1998

Poor Bobby Boucher. Emotionally stunted because of a lifetime of emotional abuse at the hands of his Mama, he longs to be with his true love, Vicki Vallencourt, and play football. But his overbearing and manipulative mother - played by Kathy Bates - will do anything to keep him home with her, including falsely claiming Boucher's father is dead, pretending to be gravely ill, and telling the gullible Boucher that anyone who disagrees with her is "the devil."

Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate

6

Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate

1967

It's bad enough that Mrs. Robinson seduces and has an affair with a recent college graduate who is the same age as her own daughter. It's even worse given that the object of her affection, Carl, is the same young man whose parents and her husband are trying to set up with her daughter, Elaine. And Mrs. Robinson - played wonderfully by Anne Bancroft - is just being a terrible mother when she tries to keep control of her young lover by threatening to reveal the affair when Carl and Elaine have fallen in love.

Eleanor Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate

7

Eleanor Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate

1962

While this Top 13 is full of domineering mothers, no other mom on this list uses the control she has over her children to cause the evil that Eleanor Iselin does in this terrific Cold War thriller. Played most famously by Angela Lansbury, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance, this mother conditions her son, a Korean War veteran, to be an assassin. We've got no problem with ambition, but for a mother to sacrifice her child to achieve her sinister political aims goes too far.

Mrs. Bates in Psycho

8

Mrs. Bates in Psycho

1960

It's hard to know just how terrible Norman Bates' mother really was, as we never actually see her in Alfred Hitchcock's classic Psycho. Instead, we're treated only to Norman's bizarre reenactments of her. Norman is completely obsessed with his mother, mentally ill and homicidal, making it clear that whatever his mother did to him while she was alive had such a profound effect on him that she continues to control his life after her death.

Lilly Dillon in The Grifters

9

Lilly Dillon in The Grifters

1990

A veteran con artist who passed the art of the scam onto her son, Dillon really does seem to love her son during the first part of the movie. But when push comes to shove, this mom - played by Anjelica Huston, who received an Academy Award nomination for her performance - cares more about money than anything else, including her son Roy. Indeed, her attempt to rip Roy off at the end of the film results in one of the more disturbing movie scenes between a mother and her child.

Mama Fratelli in The Goonies

10

Mama Fratelli in The Goonies

1985

In her second appearance on this Top 13, Anne Ramsey plays Ma Fratelli, the merciless elderly head of the Fratelli family of criminals, who the Goonies encounter on their treasure hunt. Ma Fratelli is among the more controlling mothers on this list and she doesn't shy away from torture. Indeed, her abhorrent treatment of her deformed son Sloth, who she hides away and holds prisoner in the basement, is simply inexcusable.

Beverly R. Sutphin in Serial Mom

11

Beverly R. Sutphin in Serial Mom

1994

Unlike many of the mothers on this list, Kathleen Turner's Sutphin isn't physically or mentally abusive toward her two teenage children. The trouble with this suburban housewife is that her protective instincts for her son and daughter are just a little bit extreme. A few examples: When her son's math teacher is critical of him, she runs him over with her car. And when her daughter is stood up for a date, she stabs the offending boy to death. Sutphin just couldn't be a worse influence.

Stifler's Mom in American Pie

12

Stifler's Mom in American Pie

1999

We're not suggesting that Jeanine Stifler (played by Jennifer Coolidge) didn't love her kids, and she certainly didn't physically abuse them. But her Mrs. Robinson-like decision to sleep with Stifler's high school classmate and foil Paul Finch demonstrated her utter disregard for the emotional well-being of her son, Steve, who was absolutely crushed to discover the affair and had to live with the constant embarrassment through a pair of American Pie sequels.

Ginger McKenna in Casino

13

Ginger McKenna in Casino

1995

A Las Vegas hustler and druggie, McKenna doesn't quite change her ways after reluctantly marrying wealthy casino boss Sam Rothstein. Even after their daughter Amy is born, she continues popping pills and hanging around with lowlifes. Even worse, she rants and rages at Rothstein in front of her young daughter and uses her as a pawn against her husband before ultimately abandoning her. Sharon Stone received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of this mother of the year candidate.

Can't believe they gave Faye Dunaway a Razzie for Mommie Dearest.

Joan Crawford should be number 1!! I think her portrayal was way scarier even though the story of Precious was more upsetting.

How could you possibly leave out Bubby's mum in Bad Boy Bubby? She kept him locked up for the first 30 years of his life while abusing him in all manner of ways, including sexually. She needs to be in the top 5 at least.
